HISTORY

In 1930s, the land was dredged and damned to form what we now know as Mirror Lake, which began being promoted as a summer resort getaway destination for Boston city dwellers, with land surrounding the lake put up for sale through an ambitious developer.
Underground natural springs continue to replenish the lake, with overflow moving through a culvert near the beach and into nearby Stony Brook.

A stone arch with large wooden sign stating “Welcome to Mirror Lake” was erected at the top of Mirror Lake Ave. at the intersection of Shears St. and remained there through the 1950s. Remnants of this structure can still be found there today. During its heyday as a getaway destination, a fire station, mom-and-pop style grocery store and dance hall also existed near the present-day beach on the Norfolk-side of the lake. Fishing cabins and boat rentals were also in abundance.
Over the years, many of these smaller summer cabins and lots were transformed into larger four-season homes, attracting permanent residents from far and wide who were drawn to this beautiful natural resource and who have formed a tight-knit, thriving lake community.
